The First Article that I read was called Syracuse Man Killed for Being Gay ( http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2008/11/syracuse_man_was_killed_for_be.html ) which is actually pretty self explanatory. A man in Syracuse was killed for being gay. The second article that i read was called Another Gay Teen Commits Suicide for Being Outed, ( http://www.thefrisky.com/2010-10-01/another-gay-teen-commits-suicide-after-being-outed/ ). Which is also pretty self explanatory. Another gay teen committed suicide for being outed.
This is a social issue because to me, it isn't fair. I don't think that anybody should be assaulted, or feel the need to harm themselves because of what other people think about them. In the first article it talked about how a man named Dwight R. Lee shot another man named Moses Cannon in the chest because he was gay. The thing is, these are two regular men. Two average guys that are just living their lives, until one has to go and end the others. It isn't fair to me. Especially since there wasn't even any conversation or arguments prior to the assault. They didn't even know each other. But, that didn't stop Dwight R. Lee from going ahead and shooting Moses in the chest. It's not fair.
What I also don't like about this situation, is the fact that he didn't even try to get to know Moses Cannon as a person. He just shot him, with out any knowledge of his personality, or what type of person he was. But, I think that part might get to me more that somebody else because I like to get to know somebody's personality before I judge them, but that's just me.
The next article that I read, which was called Another Gay Teen Commits Suicide for Being Outed, was pretty disappointing too. A young boy, only 18 years of age, Tyler Clementi committed suicide because his idiot roommate broadcasted a video of him having gay sex. Which might seem kind of funny, but it really isn't. One, broadcasting something that personally is never nor will ever be funny. Two, you never know who is watching, or what people might think about him after that. Which is obviously what his roommate, Dharun Ravi, wasn't thinking about, because after that people started to make fun of him. Really bad. Which isn't fair at all, not only because they were making fun of him for something that was totally his decision and had nothing to do with them. But also for making fun of him for something that he wanted to be kept a secret, which isn't anybody's fault except for his roommate.
I know that thoughts on Gay Rights differ depending on the person. Some might agree that gay's are people too and deserve the same rights as people who who aren't gay or bisexual. While others might disagree. I, myself, think that any decision that is this personal and independent, shouldn't be decides for you by the government or anybody else but yourself. I think that people deserve to be happy with exactly who they are, regardless of what other people think. Some might disagree, some might agree, and that's the issue.
Wow, this post was so moving. I also like how much information and thought you packed into it. The organization is also really good. Nice work Siena! The issue is really sad and you were brave to take it on.
